Product Description

When the Bolt Hole Won’t Line Up, This Plate Fixes It

No concrete pour is perfect. No steel beam lands exactly where the drawing says it should. Between the designed position and the as-built position, there’s a gap — sometimes 5mm, sometimes 20mm. A fixed hole won’t forgive that gap. A slotted hole will.

The 2-slot adjustable connection plate is the simplest tolerance-compensating component in curtain wall hardware. Two long slots replace two round holes. Loosen the bolts, slide the plate into position, tighten — done. No grinding, no re-drilling, no welding on site. Just a few millimeters of controlled movement that saves hours of installation time.

Fabao Machinery manufactures these slotted splice plates in carbon steel and stainless steel, with slot dimensions, plate sizes, and edge distances built to your exact requirements.

How a 2-Slot Plate Solves a 20mm Problem

FIXED BRACKET (already bolted to embed)
         │
         │ ○ ← Bolt 1 (loose)
         │
    ┌────┴────┐
    │ ▬▬▬▬▬ │ ← Slot 1 — plate slides left/right
    │ │
    │ │ ← Flat plate body
    │ │
    │ ▬▬▬▬▬ │ ← Slot 2 — plate slides left/right
    └────┬────┘
         │
         │ ○ ← Bolt 2 (loose)
         │
TRANSOM / BEAM (needs to connect)

Installation sequence: ① Slide the plate until bolt centers align → ② Insert both bolts through the slots → ③ Adjust plate position to achieve correct alignment → ④ Torque bolts to specification. Connection complete.

2-Slot Adjustable Plate vs. U-Channel Connector: Which One?

Factor 2-Slot Flat Plate U-Channel Connector
Profile Flat — minimal thickness U-shaped — wraps around member
Adjustment Direction Linear (along slot axis) Linear + perpendicular (slots on two legs)
Space Required Very low profile; fits tight gaps Requires clearance for channel depth
Load Type Shear, tension in plane Shear, tension, some moment
Typical Use Beam-to-beam splice, bracket-to-transom Embed-to-bracket, mullion shoe
Cost Lower — no bending required Slightly higher — press brake or weld

Applications

  • Beam-to-Beam Splice Adjustment – Connecting two beam flanges end-to-end where site tolerance requires ±15mm longitudinal adjustment before final bolt-up.

  • Bracket-to-Transom Fine-Tuning – Installing curtain wall transoms between fixed brackets; the slot absorbs floor-to-floor variation so the transom sits dead level.

  • Canopy Beam Alignment – Adjustable splice plates at canopy steel joints where the primary structure may deviate from designed elevation.

  • Mullion Extension Joints – Connecting mullion sections vertically with a slotted plate that allows differential movement and alignment correction.

  • Existing-to-New Steel Connection in Renovations – Retrofitting new steelwork to existing structures where as-built dimensions are uncertain — the slot absorbs unknowns.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I order plates with one round hole and one slotted hole instead of two slots?
Yes. A combination of one fixed hole + one slotted hole is common — it provides a fixed reference point plus adjustment on the other end. Specify which hole is which on your drawing.

2. What’s the maximum slot length you can produce?
We can produce slots up to 200mm long. The limiting factor is plate width — the slot must leave adequate edge distance on both sides of the slot.

3. Do slotted holes reduce the load capacity of the plate?
Slotted holes primarily affect slip resistance under shear. Once bolts are torqued to specification, the friction between plate and member carries the load. For critical structural connections, use additional washers and confirm bolt torque with your engineer.

4. How do you prevent coating buildup inside the slot during galvanizing?
We account for galvanizing thickness in slot width. Slots are cut slightly oversized so that after HDG coating, the finished slot width stays within tolerance for the specified bolt diameter.

5. What if I need a plate with four slots instead of two?
Four-slot plates are produced regularly. We can also do mixed patterns — two slots + two round holes, or three slots + one hole — per your drawing.

Why Fabao for Adjustable Slotted Plates?

  • Burr-Free Slots – Laser-cut slots with clean edges and rounded ends — no sharp corners that could damage bolt threads.

  • Slot Width Tolerance – Finished slot width within +0.5mm of specification after coating — bolts slide freely, no binding.

  • Two In-House Galvanizing Lines – Consistent 50μm+ HDG coating; no outsourced finishing delays.

  • Rapid Turnaround – Slotted plates are among our fastest custom parts; standard sizes typically ship in 10–15 days.

  • Mixed-SKU Consolidation – Order slotted plates together with embed plates, angle brackets, and bolts on a single PO for reduced freight cost.
